To setup your wireless network using the Raspberry Pi follow these steps below. These details are a little more in depth than the required setup but it will act as a thorough guide.
Make sure you have a compatible wireless adapter. If you do not have a compatible Wi-Fi adapter then you can purchased one below from Amazon.
Make sure your Wi-Fi adapter is plugged into the Raspberry Pi. Before the Wi-Fi adapter can be configured it needs to check that the correct drivers are installed.
Enter the following command:
This will display all the usb devices attached to the Raspberry Pi. First thing you will need to do is to examine the list to see if the wi-fi device appears. The results may differ depending on the type of devices you have attached.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8189 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g Network adapter.
Update the package information and make sure that a network cable is plugged in and connected to your network. Enter the following.
$ apt-get update
When the update has completed enter the following.
$ apt-cache search RTL818
Your device may be different so enter your device ID. Notice that only RTL818 was entered, instead of the whole ID. This is because it didn’t find the adapter when using the apt-cache command. You may need to shorten your description.
When the search completed the output was:
Firmware-realtek – Binary firmware for Realtek wired and wireless network adapters
$ sudo apt-get install firmware-realtek
Enter the following command to see if your adapter is listed.
You will see the same ID of your device listed.

The ID of your adapter will appear under the module heading.
Create a configuration file.
$ sudo nano /etc/wpa.config
Enter the following
Add a reference to the interfaces.
$ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
Add the following
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
Save this file and exit by pressing CTRL-X and enter Y to save.
Remove your network cable and restart the network.
$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
